Kym’s Story

I lost my partner, Kym, on Thursday, October 24th, at 1:26am in the morning. I got the phone call from the hospital, letting me know they were taking her off the machines. It was unbearable to see her in that state. I had to leave the hospital because it was just too much for me to handle.

About four or five years ago, she faced breast cancer. She fought bravely and managed to get it into remission, but the cancer returned with a vengeance. It spread aggressively, starting in her liver, bones, spine, and eventually to her brain.

Kym was diagnosed as terminal. Despite exploring every possible avenue— chemo, stem cell treatments, other therapies—there was nothing that could stop it. The cancer was aggressive, and the situation was dire. She required countless blood and platelet transfusions just to keep going. Her immune system was severely compromised, and she became extremely vulnerable.

We tried to stay hopeful, but the progression was relentless. Watching her decline over those nine months was devastating. Her body became frail, her breathing laboured, her skin changed. The strength and resilience she showed were incredible, but in the end, we lost her.

Kym passed away peacefully, surrounded by love. Her funeral was held on November 6th at 11 a.m. in Queensland. It was one of the hardest days of my life, but also a moment to honour the incredible person she was.

I often feel like I let her down in her final days, and that thought weighs heavily on me. I know I did my best, but the grief and guilt are overwhelming.

I want Kym’s story to be heard. She was so much more than her illness—she was strong, loving, and brave.
