In November 2024, Dave received news that would change his life: a 6x6x3cm brain tumour. After undergoing a craniotomy in December, the tumour was identified as a grade 2 astrocytoma. While less aggressive than some, it’s still incurable—and likely to return.
Since February 2025, Dave has faced six weeks of daily radiation, with a full year of chemotherapy ahead. Most people would be forgiven for slowing down, but Dave did the opposite. Instead of stepping back, he stepped up.
He not only participated in The Big Three Trek, he was one of the driving forces behind it this year—leading the charge in both training and fundraising with unwavering determination and grit.
Dave threw himself into action in ways that have rallied an entire community. From teaming up with his local QPRC Mayor for a Parkrun, hosting a 5km community event around Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin, to setting out on a 4am “Milk Run” alongside Nedd Brockmann, inspiring everyone along his way. He even rallied local schools to host Beanie for Brain Cancer Days, showing young Australians the power of community action.
And he does it all while undergoing treatment.
His strength, openness, and ability to turn hardship into hope have captured hearts across the region and beyond. Through his efforts, Dave has raised not only vital funds but vital awareness.
The Big Three Trek has always been about more than the 150km. It’s a symbol of mateship, resilience, and refusing to give up. And thanks to people like Dave Marchant, it’s also a reminder of what’s possible—even in the face of the toughest battles.
