Jaxson’s Journey

At just nine years old, Jaxson was diagnosed with a focal brainstem juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma (JPA), a rare paediatric brain tumour. In an instant, his family found themselves navigating a journey no child or parent should ever have to face.

What began as concerning symptoms quickly became every family’s worst nightmare — hearing that their child had a tumour located within the brainstem.

In October 2023, Jaxson underwent a biopsy procedure to assess the tumour. Tragically, complications during surgery resulted in a brain bleed, leaving him with significant neurological challenges alongside an already life-changing diagnosis.

Since then, Jaxson has faced an incredibly difficult road filled with hospital admissions, rehabilitation, therapies, specialist appointments and ongoing treatment. Through every setback and challenge, he has continued to show extraordinary courage, determination and resilience.

Jaxson’s journey has also opened his family’s eyes to the reality many Australian families face when dealing with paediatric brain tumours — limited treatment options, the urgent need for greater research investment, and the lack of awareness surrounding these devastating diagnoses.

Brain tumours affect far more than the child diagnosed. They impact entire families whose lives change in an instant. The emotional, physical and financial toll can be overwhelming as families navigate treatment, rehabilitation and uncertainty, while doing everything possible to give their child the best chance at the future they deserve.

By sharing Jaxson’s story, his family hopes to raise awareness of paediatric brain tumours and advocate for increased funding into research, better treatment options and greater support for children and families facing similar diagnoses.

They also hope to highlight the incredible power of community. Throughout their journey, the kindness, generosity and support shown by family, friends and strangers has helped carry them through some of their most challenging days.

Jaxson’s story is one of courage, resilience and hope.

It is a reminder that while brain cancer and brain tumours can take so much from a child and their family, they can never take away the strength of the human spirit. Through sharing his journey, Jaxson and his family hope to shine a light on the challenges faced by children living with brain tumours and help create a future where better treatments — and ultimately a cure — are possible.

Donate today & help beat brain cancer

Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in children, and adults aged under 40 in Australia, yet alarmingly very little is known about brain cancer, its causes or how it is treated.

That’s why we need your help. Every dollar helps in the fight against brain cancer. Your donation will go towards vital research to improve patient treatments and, hopefully, find a cure one day.

All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.
