This year MHF announced our commitment of $7.5 million to the University of Newcastle to fund a dedicated brain cancer team, driving critical research, education and health care improvements for brain cancer patients and their families.
Since this announcement, we have been working closely with the University of Newcastle to ensure we can bring the best people to this team.
The first role to be recruited into this team will be The Research Development Coordinator. This is an extremely important role in the team and will be responsible for providing strategic planning support to the research group, ensuring that the focus remains on taking research out of the lab and into the community. Professor Brian Kelly, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Research & Innovation at the University of Newcastle says “We want our work to both improve the lives of people with brain cancer straight away and future-proof brain cancer research. Breakthroughs can happen when new perspectives and voices are heard.” The University will be holding interviews for this role in the coming weeks and we hope to have some exciting news to share with you shortly.
The next role to go to market for this team, and one we are extremely excited and passionate about, will be the Mark Hughes Foundation Chair in Brain Cancer. This role is what Mark likes to refer to as the ‘Marquee Player’- an outstanding researcher and leader who will bring this team together. “We’re not chasing a trophy or two points, we’re chasing something far more important – we’re chasing a cure for brain cancer.” said Mark.
