Brain Cancer Care for the Hunters Youngest of Patients

The MHF Brain Cancer Care Coordinators are at the heart of the Mark Hughes Foundation and the MHF Centre for Brain Cancer Research.

The care and support needs for all brain cancer patients are unique and we now have four nurses working across our region, guiding brain cancer patients and carers through this most complex of journeys. And in 2026, we look forward to welcoming one more.

MHF is set to fund a Paediatric Brain Cancer Care Coordinator who will join our team of Brain Cancer Care Coordinators (BCCC) in the Hunter New England Region. With the support of trekkers in the MHF Kokoda ANZAC trek, we’ll be funding a paediatric nurse to work from the John Hunter Children’s Hospital with our youngest patients.

The care and support needs of children and young adults are unique and complex, which is why having a dedicated BCCC to support brain cancer patients and their families and loved ones is so important

MHF will also offer a special kids patient pack to offer reassurance and comfort for youngest patients diagnosed with brain tumours. We look forward to welcoming our newest team member into the MHF Brain Cancer Coordinator Team in 2026.

The 2026 Kokoda ANZAC Trek for the Mark Hughes Foundation is set to be an unforgettable journey of endurance, mateship and purpose, taking place April 17–26 and led by MHF representative Kasie Sheridan alongside Ambassadors Kurt Gidley and Meg Nagle.

A team of more than 30 passionate trekkers will take on the legendary Kokoda Track, trekking from Owers Corner to Kokoda through rugged jungle terrain, steep climbs and challenging conditions — all in honour of those who served and those currently facing brain cancer.

The journey will include visits to significant wartime memorials and deeply moving ANZAC dawn services at Brigade Hill, creating moments of reflection, connection and gratitude that will stay with the team long after the trek ends.

Driven by a shared mission to make a difference, this incredible group is pushing beyond limits to raise vital funds for paediatric patient support — and with momentum building, they are on track to surpass their $150,000 fundraising goal before stepping onto the Track!

We would like to thank our major sponsors, Robson Civil Projects and Thiess as well as Bandu and Principle Living for their support and belief in our efforts to beat brain cancer.

Donate today & help beat brain cancer

Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in children, and adults aged under 40 in Australia, yet alarmingly very little is known about brain cancer, its causes or how it is treated.

That’s why we need your help. Every dollar helps in the fight against brain cancer. Your donation will go towards vital research to improve patient treatments and, hopefully, find a cure one day.

All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.
