What an extraordinary journey our Mark Hughes Foundation trekkers have just completed — 12 gruelling days in the jungle, covering over 300 kilometres through some of the toughest terrain on earth.
From climbing over Iorabaiwa Ridge and the Maguli Range, to wading through countless river crossings and holding emotional services at Brigade Hill and Isurava honouring our Australian troops — they faced mud, rain, heat and humidity, all in the name of helping to beat brain cancer.
Along the way, the team connected with local villagers, played games with the kids, and created lasting memories everywhere they went.
After 5½ relentless days, the group reached Kokoda Village, completing their first crossing at a remarkable pace. But there was no time to rest, they had to restock their back packs with fresh supplies and mentally and physically prepare to turn around and do it all again!
Drawing strength from their purpose, their determination and spirit never wavered. This tight group of men are now bonded for life.
Just before the final ascent on the return leg, the team’s spirits were lifted by a surprise visitor — Paul “The Chief” Harragon — who brought an incredible burst of energy and encouragement just when they needed it most.
After 12 days on the track, the team returned to Owers Corner, where it had all begun nearly two weeks earlier.

To every trekker — we are in awe of your strength, resilience, and spirit. You’ve done yourselves, your families, and the entire MHF community incredibly proud.
While four trekkers had to withdraw for medical reasons, we’re relieved and grateful to share that everyone is safe and well. You’ve walked in the footsteps of heroes… and become heroes yourselves.
Thanks to this incredible effort, the team and our community has already raised almost $600,000 through sponsorship and donations!
These vital funds will support the MHF Centre for Brain Cancer Research at the University of Newcastle, helping launch a ground-breaking new clinical trial testing how effectively a simple blood test can track tumour progression compared to the current gold-standard MRI.
A huge thank you to our major sponsor Fred Mayer Foundation, and to M&M Fisher Plumbing Services, Scaffbuilt Solutions, Armitage Associates, G.A.A.S Shipping Containers, Newcastle Herald, Mountain Designs, The Travel Space, and Kokoda Spirit, along with every single person who donated or followed the journey.
Together, we’re taking another powerful step forward in the fight against brain cancer.
