Trekking the Heysen Flinders Ranges for Brain Cancer Research

This week, a remarkable group of supporters will set out on an unforgettable adventure – an 8-day trek through South Australia’s iconic Flinders Ranges, all in support of the Mark Hughes Foundation. Together, this incredible team has already raised $75,000 for brain cancer research and support programs, and along the way, each trekker carries their own deeply personal reason for taking on the challenge.

Jeff walks in honour of his son Phillip, who he and Andrea lost to Glioblastoma in June 2023. “During this challenging time, the Mark Hughes Foundation has provided invaluable support, helping us navigate the brutal aftermath of our loss. By dedicating myself mentally and physically to this trek, I aim to honour Phillip and support MHF’s vital work,” Jeff shared. His goal is to raise $10,000 as a tribute to Phillip’s life and legacy.

For Margaret, the journey is one of gratitude and survival. After being diagnosed with brain cancer, she leaned on hope, world-class medical care, and groundbreaking research that gave her more time. “I owe my survival to these advancements. I want to ensure others facing this fight have access to the same life-saving treatments,” she explained.

Lisa is inspired by her mother, who bravely fought Glioblastoma in 2016 with the help of the Mark Hughes Foundation. Knowing firsthand the difference MHF makes for patients and families, Lisa is determined to give back by putting one foot in front of the other through the rugged ranges.

For Rebecca, the trek is an emotional journey following the heartbreaking loss of her husband Dave to Glioblastoma in July 2024. Their dream family trip turned into a nightmare when Dave fell ill in Darwin, leading to his devastating diagnosis. “He was gone within 12 months, and now I’m raising our three children alone. I want to help find treatment options and a potential cure so no other family has to endure this heartbreak,” she shared.

Nada also walks for her son, drawing strength from his brain cancer journey and the support the Foundation has provided along the way. “Through personal experience, I know the incredible impact MHF has on patients and their families, and I’m inspired to do my part to make a difference.”

Together, these five inspiring individuals – along with their fellow trekkers – will soak up the grandeur of Wilpena Pound, walk world-class sections of the Heysen Trail, explore breathtaking gorges, and sleep under star-filled skies. The Flinders Ranges’ rugged peaks, deep gorges, and cypress pine forests will test them physically, but their shared determination and purpose will drive them every step of the way.

This trek is more than a challenge – it’s a powerful symbol of hope, remembrance, and commitment to beating brain cancer. Donate today & help beat brain cancer

Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in children, and adults aged under 40 in Australia, yet alarmingly very little is known about brain cancer, its causes or how it is treated.

That’s why we need your help. Every dollar helps in the fight against brain cancer. Your donation will go towards vital research to improve patient treatments and, hopefully, find a cure one day.

All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.
