On Wednesday November 20, the Brain Tumour Alliance Australia (BTAA) hosted Head to the Hill in Canberra to raise awareness of the devastating impact of brain cancer on families, individuals and society.
Held in the grounds of Parliament House, members and senators of Parliament were invited to join with the broad range of people impacted by brain cancer as they shared their stories and experiences with this devastating disease.
Poignantly, they were greeted by the sight of over 1500 pairs of shoes representing the lives lost to brain cancer each year.
Speakers on the day included Senator Catryna Bilyk, BTAA Chair Craig Cardinal and Gail O’Brien AO Board Member and Patient Advocate from Chris O’Brien Lifehouse – who all shared their deeply personal and moving experiences with brain cancer.
Centre Director Professor Mike Fay and Centre Manager Kylie Hugo had the opportunity to meet with many passionate members of the brain cancer community and a range of politicians whose communities are impacted by brain cancer.
“Listening to the heartbreaking stories of the people who have lost loved ones to brain cancer reinforces the importance of what we do,” said Professor Fay.
“There’s always a pressing need for additional funding into brain cancer research, so to bring these stories to politicians is a powerful opportunity to ensure their voices continue to be heard.”
This annual event is an opportunity to bring attention to the need for increased funding for research into diagnostic and treatment options for people with brain cancer.
